To begin, I definitely want to mention that I’m far from a ‘Unity expert’ at this point – I’m still learning and doing alot of trial and error at this point, but am at the point where I’m at least comfortable enough that I feel like throwing this out there for the community. But first, a bit of background: In November, we shipped our first game, built using a custom engine and all of the pains and joys that brings. Unfortunately the sales and feedback have been less than what we were hoping for and the rest of the team has downsized themselves to part-time or less as the demands of paying rent and eating regularly started to creep into play. This is the joy of the indie developer. As a team, we’ve been doing a bit of experimentation with Mobile titles (android in particular), as the barrier to entry [...]
Recently Vivek Menon, the author of the new E-Book ‘Unity iOS Essentials‘, was gracious enough to provide me with a preview copy of his upcoming E-Book to review. Now to begin, I’ll throw a quick caveat by saying that I’ve been using Unity fulltime for about 3 months now, and have been diving fairly heavily into the PC / Web based aspects of development. I don’t have an iPhone, so I can’t comment specifically on the platform specific nature of the book’s content. Having said that, one of Unity’s strong points is the simple fact that the vast majority of the development that you will be doing carries across from one platform to another and is (by it’s very nature) designed to be seamless from the porting standpoint. For example, my personal development target currently is Facebook / Social Web deployment – and since I am targeting the largest possible [...]
Firing up the blog once again. It’s been a while, and things have changed quite a bit over the past year or so. Having spent the last many years building custom tech and fighting the engine licensing battle, it’s very refreshing having the ability to simply focus on the gameplay side of the project. Unity has been a breathe of fresh air frankly. The community is impressive in just about every way imaginable. There are some very talented developers building on the tech, and the way that Unity manages extensions and plugins really means that just about anything is possible as far as being able to take the basic tool and run with it. I am truly and pleasantly surprised with what the community has been able to accomplish with the system, and also feel that it’s an ideal time to be jumping into the engine and getting started [...]
